Of course no fantasy game is complete without Goblins. These green pointy eared Goblins have one thing on their minds and one thing only, loot. No collector is save from their grubby hands!
Who is the Goblin?
Goblins are very unique troops in the game as they’re the only type of troop that prioritizes buildings that contain resources. They’re extremely fast and deal twice the amount of damage to collectors, storages and the Town Hall. For this reason they’re great for farming loot, while they even have some niche utility in clan wars.
Read on to learn everything about Goblin stats, upgrades and the most effective strategies to make the most out of this troop.

Should I prioritize Goblins?
Goblins are good for farming loot, but you can easily go through the entire game without upgrading them. Barbarians are just about as effective at lower Town Hall levels and they tend to destroy more buildings to the lack of a favorite target which results more easily in at least a single star. Leveling up your Barbarians and Archers also has the added benefit of stronger troops spawned by the Barbarian King and Archer Queen.
From Town Hall 9 onward the ability of Goblins to snipe loot storages becomes more meaningful, since you can jump to the core of the base and use spells to quickly take out the Dark Elixir Storage. Their low elixir cost and quick training speed may also make them the most efficient army for farming Dark Elixir at these levels.
Best Farming Strategies for Goblins
Goblins are great farming troops due to their high speed, high damage and their favorite target being buildings that contain loot. There’s basically two ways to farm loot with Goblins, raiding full Elixir Collectors, Gold Mines and Dark Elixir Drills or going after storages deeper inside the base.
Attacking inactive bases
The most straightforward farming strategy for Goblins is simply attacking inactive bases. You simply tap next until you find a base with full high level Elixir Pumps, Mines and Dark Elixir Drills. When you’re only bringing Goblins you will be restricting yourself to dead bases, so you’ll have to be patient.
Being able to quickly spot Elixir Pumps that are full allows you to skip bases quickly. You won’t have to worry about whether the other collectors are full, because you’ll typically find if one or two elixir pumps are full, that all the mines and dark elixir drills are full too.
Simply drop 5~10 Goblins on each collector and if you spot an exposed Town Hall on the outside of the base, you can take it out too so you won’t lose trophies. If you’re higher up in the Gold League you may not get the chance to snipe the Town Hall, which makes this strategy more difficult to maintain trophies compared to Barch, unless you have Jump Spells.
Goblin Knife is a popular farming strategy at Town Hall 9, because it’s very effective at getting to the Dark Elixir Storage. Since Goblins are too weak to get into the core of a base, they benefit greatly from support by Giants.
Use Goblins, Heroes (and possibly archers) to take out outer buildings to create a funnel. Funnel Giants and your heroes into the base with the help of some Wall Breakers. Then drop a Jump Spell to get your troops to the Dark Elixir Storage and often enough the Town Hall too. Use a Rage Spell to quickly take the storages out.
Use Healing Spells to keep your troops healthy and bring a Poison Spell to deal with pesky troops from the Clan Castle. Don’t send all your Goblins in a single wave, because they’ll quickly die to splash damage.
Also consider taking out 30% of the base so that the poor defender at least gets a shield in return for losing all their precious dark elixir!
Town Hall 10
From Town Hall 10 onward you can brew your own Freeze Spells. These allow you to freeze powerful defenses such as Inferno Towers and X-Bows which are often used at the center of a base. It’s even better if your clan mates donate Wall Wreckers, so you have more spell slots to bring Freeze Spells. Only use as many spells as are needed to get to the storages as the cost of spells quickly adds up.
Town Hall 11
Goblin Knife is even effective at Town Hall 11 and Town Hall 12, particularly against inactive and rushed bases. Pairing the Grand Warden’s ability with Freeze Spells ensures you can get to the Dark Elixir Storage.
Goblins in Clan Wars
Goblins see very little use in Clan Wars, because they’re just to fragile as a Wizard Tower or Mortar can take out entire groups of them. They can, however, function well as clean up troops. When you use armies like Lavaloon and GoHo you are left with lots of buildings at the end because Hog Riders and Balloons ignore buildings that aren’t defenses.
Instead of risking running out of time, because your Balloons and Hogs have to backtrack to take out the remaining buildings, you can use Goblins at the end of the attack. Their bonus damage against resource buildings comes really in handy in these cases.
Goblins on Defense
Goblins can be decent to top off high level clan castles. They can deal a good amount of damage to enemy troops before an attacker can respond with a Poison Spell all the while other troops like a Baby Dragon or Valkyrie attract fire from enemy troops.
Over to you
Goblins are primarily farming troops, but Barbarians (possibly combined with Archers) can farm loot as well as Goblins can if not better. This is especially true, because it’s hard to maintain trophies when using Goblins, unless you’re using Wall-Breakers, Earthquake Spells or a Jump Spell to snipe the Town Hall.
They’re also unreliable for trophy pushing and have little use in Clan Wars. For these reasons I don’t recommend upgrading them, unless there’s nothing else left to upgrade. Do keep in mind that they will increase your ‘Offensive War Weight’ even if not significantly.
But perhaps you’re getting great results with Goblins. If in your experience Goblins are totally worth it let us know in the comments below!
