At no time is it more evident that the Barbarian is the troop most eager to fight than when he charges headlong into a wall or even the ocean!
Who is the Barbarian?
Fortunately, his enthusiasm isn’t the only thing he has going for him. The iconic Barbarian has an uncanny resemblance to the famous wrestler Hulk Hogan. Much like what Pikachu does for Pokemon, so do people know Clash of Clans by the yellow-mustached Barbarian.
The Barbarian is the game’s quintessential farming troop. He’s the cheapest troop in the game, which allows you to more or less spam him. Not only that, he also has a role to play in clan wars, as the Barbarian King unlocked at Town Hall 7, spawns them as part of his unique ability.
Even more amazing is his ability to fly! (but only in the commercial above 😉 ).

- Cheapest unit in the game, including relative to army camp housing space.
- Fast training time.
- Relatively high hit points.
- High amount of dps (damage per second).
- Remains an efficient farming troop at level 8.
- Great for swarming point defenses.
- Great for distracting Mortars in Clan Wars.
- Slow movement speed.
- Very vulnerable to splash damage from Mortars, Wizard Towers, and Giant bombs.
- As they’re melee units they can’t attack over walls.
Should I upgrade the Barbarian?
Barbarians as the cheapest troop to create is the most effecient troop for acquiring loot up to Town Hall 9. While lacking a ranged attack, they have a decent amount of hit points and deal a good amount of damage against buildings.
The Barbarian King, unlocked at Town Hall 7, spawns Barbarians through use of the Iron Fist ability. For this reason it’s worth maxing the level of your Barbarians because Barbarians spanwed through the Iron Fist ability are of the same level as the level researched in your Laboratory.
Best Farming Strategies for Barbarians
Mass Barbarians at Town Hall 1 to 6
At these levels the most efficient farming army is simply just Barbarians without any other troops. The reason is that there are few splash defenses at this point and the bases are still small, leaving collectors and storages more exposed to attack.
Barch at Town Hall 7
With barch you spread out the damage defenses do because while your Barbarians tank hits, the Archers are safe from attack, for as long as the Barbarians are alive.
Finally, Archers allow you to attack deeper into a base, because of their long range.
Barbarians at Town Hall 8 and Town Hall 9
Barch is still an efficient army composition at Town Hall 8 and higher for hitting ‘dead’ inactive bases for gold and elixir. However, if you’re looking for dark elixir, you’ll have to add Giants and Wall Breakers to break deeper into a base.
GiBarch, while more costly than Barch, is a great strategy at Town Hall 8 and Town Hall 9 to farm enough dark elixir to upgrade your king and dark troops.
As a Town Hall 9 you can easily get a ton of loot from hitting Town Hall 8 bases (who are typically sitting on a lot of elixir they can’t spend). Also new Town Hall 9 bases, or 8.5 bases, make for easy targets. Usually a single Rage Spell is enough to break into the core of a base, gaining you access to the storages.
Barbarians at Town Hall 10+
Barch is generally still effective against inactive bases at Town Hall 10 to Town Hall 12. However, it’s more difficult to find inactive bases at these levels, because people who stuck with the game all the way up to Town Hall 12 are much more likely to play the game more regularly.
We therefore recommend using LavaLoon (Lava Hounds and Balloons) instead as it allows you to go after those lucrative Gold Storages, Elixir Storages and the Dark Elixir Storage. On top of that, strong armies allow you to easily get to a high trophy league. The bonus you get from destroying bases at higher trophy leagues makes up for the higher cost of a Laloon army.
Barbarians in clan wars
Barbarians are not very effective in clan wars. Wizard Towers, Mortars and Giants Bombs make short work of entire groups of Barbarians. At lower levels, it’s better to use Giants, Wizards and Archers as part of your army composition.
From Town Hall 7 on, Barbarians become relevant in clan wars due to the Barbarian King that spawns up to twenty-two of them as part of its ability. The Barbarian King and the Barbarians it spawns gain increased damage and speed. Keep in mind that his ability does not affect Barbarians that are not spawned as a result of his ability.
Not only that, the level of Barbarians it summons depends on what level you have unlocked in your Laboratory. For this reason, you want to ensure you upgrade them to the highest level of your respective Town Hall. Note that you want to look out for Giant Bombs so your spawned Barbarians don’t die right after triggering your King’s ability.
Barbarians on defense
Barbarians aren’t the ideal troop to request for your clan castle to protect your loot or from getting 3 starred in clan wars. Their slow movement speed and lack of a ranged attack makes them too easy to take out with ranged units. Unlike Archers with their ranged attack, Barbarians also lack the benefit from being able to have buildings and walls cover for them.
How to defend against Barbarians
Considering just how weak Barbarians are you may think you may as well not bother about designing your base to counter them. However as long as a group of Barbarians isn’t threatened by splash defenses or traps they can quickly destroy defenses and resource buildings.
Centralized splash defenses
Placing Mortars and Wizard Towers closer to the center of the base ensures they can fire off a lot more shots before being taken down by enemy troops. This is the most effective way to defend against Barbarians and Archers which are commonly used up to Town Hall 9.
Clan Castle troops
Any troops that deal splash damage are very effective against Barbarians. Wizards, Valkyries, Dragons and Baby Dragons will bring a Barbarian attack to a quick halt. Troops that can fly are particularly effective, because the Barbarians cannot attack them.
Bombs and Giant Bombs
Placing Bombs and Giants Bombs near your Elixir Storages and Gold Storages takes out entire groups of Barbarians in one go.
Giant Bombs in Clan Wars
The enraged Barbarians spawned by the Barbarian King are often overlooked, when they can do a lot of damage. Inferno Towers are a popular target of the Barbarian King who can quickly overwhem it with it’s Iron Fist ability. A Giant Bomb next to the Inferno Tower counters both Barbarians spawned by the Barbarian King and threats such as Hog Riders.
Over to you
While the most famous troop, the Barbarian, isn’t one of the strongest troops, it plays an important role at various parts of the game. At the lower Town Hall levels making your entire army consist out of these yellow mustached fanatics is the most efficient way to acquire precious loot. At higher levels, they remain useful in combination with other troops such as Archers and Giants.
So take up the sword and raid some lucrative inactive bases with your Barbarian armies; you’ll often find yourself sharing his enthusiasm for battle when this cheap troops gets you more loot than you know what to do with!
